Self-Advocacy Simulation Game

Question 1:

Today is your yearly physical. You have been feeling tired for the past 2-3 weeks but don't know why. You have done some research and have a list of possible illnesses that might explain your excessive fatigue. You ask your doctor what could be wrong with you and he brushes it off and says you are probably working too hard. You:

  1. Listen to your doctor. He is the professional and is probably right.
    • If your instincts are telling you that it is more than working too hard, be aware that there are times when your doctor is wrong. It is your job to speak up for yourself. You know your body best, so reiterate your concerns and explain that you think it is more than working too hard. Pursue a second opinion if necessary.
  2. Speak up and ask to be tested for the illnesses you have researched.
    • Your choice to stand up for yourself and ask to be checked displays self-advocacy! Good for you.
  3. Wait two more weeks to see if it goes away before you mention it again.
    • It is best to voice your concerns now while you are with your doctor. If you are unable to speak up and your symptoms persist - call your doctor back within two weeks. Remember your life is in your hands.
